2022 Toyota Tacoma Lighting Build: HJR Taco's Off-Road Setup

2022 Toyota Tacoma Lighting Build: HJR Taco's Off-Road Setup

Every Tacoma Build Tells a Story

Some truck builds are created for shows.

Others are built for rock crawling, overlanding, or weekend trail runs.

For @hjr_taco, his 2022 Toyota Tacoma serves a different purpose.

It's a family adventure vehicle.

The name "HJR" comes from the initials of his children, which also inspired the creation of his Instagram page. What started as a way to document outdoor adventures has grown into a carefully built Tacoma designed for camping trips, family memories, and exploring new places.

Like many Toyota Tacoma owners, he quickly discovered that once daylight disappears, visibility becomes one of the most important upgrades on any vehicle.

That realization eventually led him to install the Suparee Recon 2 Ditch Lights.

In fact, when discussing future upgrades, he joked that truck modifications aren't always at the top of the priority list.

Family comes first.

That practical mindset can be seen throughout the Tacoma build. Every modification has a purpose, whether it's improving capability, safety, or comfort during camping trips with his kids.

The build reflects a practical approach to off-road modifications. Every upgrade serves a purpose, whether it's improving capability, visibility, or comfort during outdoor adventures.

Why Tacoma Owners Upgrade Their Lighting

Toyota Tacomas are among the most capable midsize trucks on the market.

However, even the best suspension setup and aggressive tires can only take you so far if visibility becomes limited after sunset.

Night driving introduces challenges that factory lighting often struggles to address:

  • Narrow forest roads
  • Remote trail systems
  • Wildlife crossings
  • Dust and fog
  • Sharp corners and switchbacks

This is one reason ditch lights have become one of the most popular Tacoma upgrades in recent years. Across the off-road community, drivers consistently cite improved peripheral visibility and increased confidence during nighttime driving as major benefits of auxiliary lighting.

Why He Chose the Suparee Recon 2

Compact Size, Serious Brightness

When asked about his first impressions of the Recon 2, brightness was the first thing he mentioned.

"The brightness is a big thing, especially coming from such a compact unit."

Compact LED pod lights often force owners to choose between appearance and performance.

The Recon 2 surprised him by delivering both.

Despite its small footprint, it produces enough usable light to significantly improve visibility without overwhelming the truck's clean appearance.

Long-Distance Spot Beam Performance

Lighting the Trail Ahead

The Recon 2 on this Tacoma uses a spot beam configuration.

According to HJR Taco:

"The distance the Recon goes, I understand I got the spot beam, so it performs its specified pattern pretty well."

For off-road driving, beam distance is often just as important as total output.

Being able to see farther down the trail helps drivers:

  • Identify obstacles sooner
  • Improve reaction time
  • Navigate unfamiliar terrain
  • Reduce fatigue during long nighttime drives

Many experienced off-road builders prioritize dedicated spot-beam auxiliary lighting for these exact reasons. Baja Designs, for example, frequently highlights long-range visibility as a critical part of trail-leading and nighttime exploration setups.

The Feature That Stands Out Most

Amber DRL That Turns Heads

Brightness wasn't the feature that generated the most excitement.

The DRL was.

"That beautiful DRL that many compact LED pods do not offer."

Today's off-road lighting market is more competitive than ever.

Performance matters.

Appearance matters too.

The Recon 2's amber daytime running light adds a premium look while helping the vehicle stand out both on and off the trail.

For many Tacoma owners, small details like this help transform a lighting upgrade into a complete vehicle enhancement.

Built for Family Adventures

The Story Behind HJR

While discussing future modifications, the conversation naturally shifted away from truck parts and toward family.

That's when HJR explained where the name behind the account comes from.

The letters "HJR" are the initials of his children and represent the reason he started sharing adventures online in the first place.

For him, this Tacoma isn't simply an off-road build.

It's a vehicle for creating memories.

Whether it's a camping trip, a scenic drive, or an evening watching the sunset together, every mile becomes part of a larger story.

One image perfectly captures that spirit.

The truck may be built for adventure, but the adventure itself is about family.

What's Next for the Build?

Hyper 5 Is Already on the Wishlist

Like every great Tacoma build, this one continues to evolve.

The next major upgrade?

A roof rack.

Family camping trips require gear, and gear requires storage.

As HJR Taco explained:

"We've discovered that the bed of the truck fills up pretty quick with what we have to pack to make sure these kids survive the nights of camping."

But storage isn't the only reason for adding a roof rack.

Future lighting plans are already in place.

After seeing another SUPAREE customer running the Helm 7, he became interested in expanding his lighting setup even further.

"When I get this roof rack, it will 1000% be reserved for the Hyper 5s as my light bar."

For many enthusiasts, vehicle builds are never truly finished.

They're simply waiting for the next adventure.

Why Ditch Lights Remain One of the Best Tacoma Upgrades

Ditch lights continue to be one of the most effective upgrades for Tacoma owners because they provide practical benefits in real-world driving situations.

Improved Peripheral Visibility

See farther along the sides of trails and forest roads.

Better Obstacle Detection

Spot rocks, branches, and terrain changes earlier.

Increased Confidence

Drive with greater awareness during nighttime adventures.

Clean Installation

Modern LED pod lights offer substantial performance without requiring large light bars or bulky mounting solutions.

Final Thoughts

The best vehicle builds are not defined by how many modifications they have.

They're defined by the experiences they enable.

For @hjr_taco, this Tacoma isn't just a truck.

It's a platform for family adventures, camping trips, and creating memories with his children.

The Suparee Recon 2 Ditch Lights have already proven themselves as a valuable addition thanks to their compact size, impressive brightness, long-range spot beam performance, and eye-catching amber DRL.

And if future plans become reality, a set of Hyper 5s may soon be joining the build.

We'll be watching.

FAQ

Are ditch lights worth it on a Toyota Tacoma?

Yes. Ditch lights significantly improve visibility on trails, forest roads, and other low-light environments by illuminating areas that factory headlights cannot reach.

What are the best ditch lights for Tacoma owners?

The best ditch lights depend on your driving style. Spot beam lights offer greater distance, while flood beams provide wider coverage. Many Tacoma owners prefer compact LED pod lights that balance performance and appearance.

What are the benefits of amber DRLs?

Amber DRLs improve daytime visibility, enhance vehicle styling, and can provide better contrast in dusty, foggy, or low-visibility conditions.

What is the difference between Suparee Recon 2 and Hyper 5?

The Recon 2 is a compact auxiliary pod light commonly used as a ditch light, while the Hyper 5 is a larger high-output pod light designed for maximum performance and broader lighting coverage.
